Malaysia is already well known as one of the leading exporters of
quality furniture. The most popular wood for furniture is rubberwood, a
light coloured, light hardwood. Traditional markets for Malaysian
furniture have been Japan, the US and West Asia, but the newly enlarged
European Union (EU) is likely to provide abundant opportunities for
domestic furniture makers as well. With better designs and the
introduction of high-technology, Malaysia will be able to add value to
its furniture products and may well increase its market share in Europe.
Malaysian furniture manufactures must not be complacent towards
competition from new emerging markets. Under the government's second
Master Plan (1996-2005), the Malaysian furniture industry has been
identified as a "target industry". In addition, National Timber Industry
Policy (NATIP) had been formulated to provide the direction for the
timber industry in Malaysia from 2009 up to the year 2020 so that timber
remains sustainable and competitive in a challenging global
environment.
